blok-auth is built to provide confirmation of product authenticity using a secure tech solution based on blockchain. Our objective is to provide this solution to a number of industries to provide confirmation of authenticity.The overall solution not only gives companies the security of guaranteeing the authenticity of their products but also provides consumers with the knowledge that the product is genuine.

The advent of the connected car makes it a big target for data breach or data theft. Vehicle information and telemetry have high security requirements and require constant high protection from threat actors. Our approach to the current situation, as well as the dangers from hacking, can reduce the potential insecurity associated with IoT.

The market for counterfeiting is enormous. According to an article and report by PWC (June 2017), some 1.6 trillion € in fraudulent goods are sold worldwide every year and this obviously affects global business, wherever intellectual property adds value to its owners and enables price differentiation. The drink industry has a particularly compelling need for a solution given the extent to which it is susceptible to counterfeit substitution and adulterated products, which has both economic and human costs.

Counterfeiting is rife at both high and lower end of the market

Counterfeiting is rife at both high end (e.g. prestige wines and spirits), with reports of 30,000 bottles of fake wine sold in China per hour, and at the lower end of the market (e.g. baby milk, with reports of 63 babies dying in 2016 in China through consumption of contaminated milk products); over 15,000 people in Russia were poisoned by adulterated spirits in 2014 alone.

Lost revenue, devalued brands and decline in consumer trust

This leads to a combination of lost revenue, devalued brands as well as a decline in consumer trust which takes years to build and seconds to be lost. Additionally, there is a social cost, with public authorities dealing with the consequences – in particular the potential damage to consumers´ health – and increased regulation for the industry as well as a loss in tax and excise.

What is blockchain?

Blockchain is a decentralised distributed ledger, that is set up to have lots of copies of the database, that are floating around among multiple computers in a distributed manner, and importantly, redundant. So if one of those computers loses the database, it can be recovered by any other computer in the system.

An encrypted database (and timestamped) and only with the proper keys can anyone actually read it

This database is subdivided into what are called blocks, essentially chunks of data, which are chained together. When we want to add more data to the database, we add another block to it. When we need to make a chain (and add another block) this is done as fast as the speed of the computers and the speed of the network on which it sits.

To quote Prof. Ahmed Banafa, an IoT expert and the No.1 tech voice to follow, according to LinkedIn in 2016, “Blockchain technology offers a way of recording transactions or any digital interaction in a way that is designed to be secure, transparent, highly resistant to outages, auditable, and efficient; as such, it carries the possibility of disrupting industries and enabling new business models”. Blockchain is frequently used in the same sentence as bitcoin, but the two are very separate things. One is the underlying architecture and the other a cryptocurrency using the architecture to distribute and control the currency.
